Shearling & Sheepskin Jackets

Shearling is not a lining. It is a single sheepskin pelt with the wool left on — leather on the outside, natural fleece on the inside, one material doing both jobs. That is why real shearling insulates like nothing manufactured: the wool traps warm air in millions of fibres, breathes so you do not overheat indoors, and keeps insulating in damp cold where synthetics fail. Our shearling collection is two definitive pieces: the men's Aviator Shearling Jacket, a flight-pattern jacket with a buckle collar built for northern winters, and the Women's Shearling Coat, a full-length relaxed coat in the same honest construction.

Real versus faux shearling is the comparison that matters here, and it is not close. Faux shearling (usually polyester fleece bonded to synthetic suede) imitates the look at a tenth of the price and a fraction of the warmth and lifespan; it pills, mats and eventually peels. Real shearling gets softer and more personal for decades — the fleece settles to your shape, the hide takes on patina, and a good shearling coat is a twenty-year garment. That is the entire explanation for the price difference, and it is why we do not sell faux shearling under any ambiguous name: if it is shearling on this site, it is sheepskin.

Who needs shearling? Anyone whose winter is real: the US Midwest and Northeast, the Mountain West, and most of Canada, where a coat is equipment from November to March. Shearling's particular gift is warmth without bulk — one layer replaces the parka-plus-sweaters system, and it looks like a coat rather than expedition gear. The aviator suits men who want that warmth in a jacket length with heritage detailing; the long coat suits women who want maximum coverage and a softer, draped register. Both are heavy in the hand — that weight is the material itself, and it disappears on the body.

Prices are $459 for the aviator and $555 for the long coat, USD with approximate CAD — firmly mid-market for real shearling, where heritage brands charge $1,000 and beyond. Care is simpler than people expect: brush the fleece, air the coat, store it cool and unsealed, and use a shearling specialist for cleaning. Sizes XS–XXL, with garment measurements on the product pages — shearling fits generously by design because the fleece is part of the fit.

Wearing shearling indoors, travelling with it, and sizing it. Shearling's warmth raises a fair question: will you roast indoors? Wool breathes — it buffers temperature rather than sealing it — so a shearling worn open over a shirt stays comfortable in heated spaces far longer than a synthetic parka does; closed, over knitwear, it is for outdoors in real cold. For travel, shearling is the coat you wear onto the plane rather than pack: it crushes poorly in luggage but works as its own blanket at altitude. Sizing has one quirk worth knowing — the fleece compresses where your body presses it over the first weeks, effectively tailoring the fit and freeing a little room, so a shearling that feels exactly right (not roomy) at first is the correctly sized one. Choose your usual size, wear it through its settling period, and by mid-winter it will fit like it was cut on you — because, in effect, it was.

Shearling & Sheepskin Jackets — Frequently Asked Questions

How warm is a real shearling jacket?

Warm enough for serious winter — real shearling was the original aviation insulation at altitude. The wool fleece traps air, the hide blocks wind, and the material keeps insulating in damp cold. Both our shearling pieces handle typical northern US and Canadian winter days with light layers beneath.

Is shearling worth the money?

If your winters are cold, yes: a real shearling garment lasts 15–25 years, stays warm without bulk, and ages beautifully. Divided across its life, a $459–$555 shearling costs less per winter than repeatedly replacing synthetic winter coats — and performs better throughout.

What is the difference between shearling and sheepskin?

Sheepskin is the material — the pelt of a sheep. Shearling specifically means the pelt has been sheared to an even wool length and is worn wool-side-in. Our jackets are shearling sheepskin: one pelt, leather outside, sheared wool fleece inside.

How can I tell real shearling from faux?

Part the fleece: on real shearling the wool grows directly out of the leather hide with no fabric layer between. Faux shearling shows a knitted or woven backing. Real shearling also smells faintly of leather and its fleece varies slightly in texture; faux is perfectly uniform.

How do I care for a shearling coat?

Brush the fleece gently, air the coat after wear, store cool and dry in a breathable cover (never sealed plastic), and use a specialist shearling cleaner. Light spots on the leather side wipe off; never machine wash or tumble dry.
